YÖKDİL Scoring, Uses and Score Validity
Only correct answers count and incorrect answers do not cancel them. Eighty correct answers correspond to 100, so the target number correct should be based on the required score.
Currency note: This guide was checked on 5 August 2026 against information published by the official test owner. Dates, fees, test-centre availability, acceptance and visa rules can change, so confirm the current official notice and the requirements of your receiving organisation before booking.
YÖKDİL Scoring, Uses and Score Validity brings the current official structure together with the practical actions a candidate should take. YÖKDİL is ÖSYM’s 80-question multiple-choice examination used to document foreign-language proficiency for higher-education purposes. English is offered in Science, Health Sciences and Social Sciences; in certain sessions Arabic, German and French are offered only in Social Sciences.
In brief
Only correct answers count and incorrect answers do not cancel them. Eighty correct answers correspond to 100, so the target number correct should be based on the required score.
Current official framework
Five-year and indefinite validity provisions apply to different purposes. Do not apply the graduate/preparatory rule to academic recruitment or associate-professorship use without checking the guide.
| Topic | Official framework |
|---|---|
| Scoring | YÖKDİL is scored out of 100. Only correct answers earn credit and incorrect answers do not cancel correct ones. |
| Validity | Under the guide, YÖKDİL results are valid for five years for graduate admission and preparatory-program exemption, and indefinitely for academic-staff and associate-professorship applications. Other uses depend on the receiving institution’s rules. |
Turning the format into preparation
Translate the score scale into targets by tracking overall score, section minimums, validity and institutional acceptance in one table.
Actionable preparation plan
- Record overall and section minimums plus policies on MyBest, OSR, equivalence and validity.
- Convert mock performance only with official tables or an official scoring engine.
- Choose vocabulary and texts for Science, Health Sciences or Social Sciences rather than relying only on general YDS material.
- Prioritise the weakest section that is also critical to the application requirement.
- When the score report arrives, verify name, date, product type and delivery method against the application file.
- Use subject familiarity to process academic relationships faster, not to answer from outside knowledge.
Common mistakes for this topic
- Assuming the overall score is always a simple sum or average of skill scores.
- Treating unofficial conversion tables as institutional policy.
- Failing to distinguish test-owner validity from receiving-organisation rules.
- Ignoring field terminology and studying only general English.
Quick self-check for YÖKDİL
If you cannot evidence all three points in your YÖKDİL preparation, repair the current study process before adding more resources.
- I track overall and section minimums together.
- I use only official score guidance.
- I know the final validity date for my receiving organisation.
Frequently asked questions
What score should I target?
Use the receiving organisation’s overall and section requirements for YÖKDİL; no universal “good score” applies to everyone.
Is a conversion table exact equivalence?
Different tests have different constructs. Use only official comparisons and the receiving organisation’s policy.
